Speechless is the word I would best describe my state after reading Debra Ann Brown-Davis' autobiographical tale, ‘My Daddy, the Devil and Me’. Davis heroically takes us through the horrific accounts of an alleged sexual relationship with her biological father for 21 years. A relationship, Davis says, started when she was drugged and raped at age 15 in a motel by her father shortly after reuniting with him. The shame trapped Davis into life of crime, drugs, prostitution and depression for many years to follow. A tale made for the big screen; in the likeness of a Tyler Perry production or something in the lines of TD Jakes' ‘Women Are Thou Loose.’

Daddy's Little Girl
Every girl craves the attention and love of their father and young Debra was no different. As so many girls estranged from their dads, Debra idealized Mitch; despite knowing very little about him. Later she would find out he was a drug dealer, ex-con, a habitual liar and pedophile. So when he appeared at age 15 in a tan Eldorado, Debra was captivated and enthralled.

"He had very dark skin, with the most appealing grayish-bluish
eyes. They were captivating really. To this day, I've never seen
eyes like that on another black man."

It did not take long for Mitch's sinister and demented agenda to become apparent. By the end of chapter one, young Debra's world goes topsy-turvy. In one night, she entered the gates of hell with daddy leading the way when he gives her cocaine and seduces her.

Hello, I want to introduce you to the Devil.
Davis characterizes her father, Mitch, as a damaged man rather than one who was innately evil. She alludes to his distorted self-image and possible undiagnosed narcissistic personality disorder may have been at the core of his abuse of her and countless other impressionable women. As the old saying goes, "hurt people hurt people." Surprisingly enough, Davis does not place all the blame on her father. Instead, she serves herself a sizable portion; charging that it was largely due to a misguided love for her father and his manipulation of that that love. In the final two chapters, Davis describes the events and circumstances that lead to her finally leaving.

"What finally let me see clearly, after all those years was not
getting high anymore... while Mitch drank and smoked, I stayed
sober. And, being sober I fell out of love with him."

The core of the book tells of Davis' experiences after Mitch's influence; her trials as a teenage runaway prostitute, her struggle with drug addiction. Davis walks us through her legal troubles, imprisonment and her unsuccessful attempt at motherhood. It is filled with dangerous encounters with the wrong people and the occasional benevolent, angelic presence to the rescue. Eventually an awakening to Christianity is what set her free and saved her life. I would say there are points where the book is so raw, that it may cause squeamish, sheltered readers to pause. Although not a literary masterpiece by any means, Davis' story is hugely compelling; not to mention, the book's pacing electric. Reader will find it hard to put it down. It is an easy, interesting read. This book is one you will sure to remember. I whole-heartily recommend this book to anyone...especially those working in women crisis programs, rehabilitation centers, community healthcare centers, and church ministries as an educational/ instructional tool.

How to Get Over Your Ex

If a person has an experience that is physically, mentally or emotionally traumatic, the mind deals with the situation in one of several different ways. Some people abuse alcohol, food, drugs or other substances to numb the feelings they have inside. Others mourn for a short period of time, restore their faith, balance and sanity, and somehow miraculously move on. But the rest of us left over, usually those who are very analytical and logical, have trouble processing deeply troubling situations. So, we replay the painful situation over and over again in our minds, searching for an answer. But the problem is, the answer cannot be found in the rational mind, because the problem is on an emotional plain. Therefore, the solution has to come from the heart, which needs to be healed and restored. Here is the step by step process I have adapted to end obsessive thinking about an Ex:

Step 1:

Don't take anything your Ex ever said or did personally, because nothing your Ex ever said or did was about you. Even if your Ex downright blames you for everything that went wrong in your relationship, realize their statement is only coming from who they are, which has absolutely nothing to do with the person you are.

Step 2:

However, not taking your Ex personally is a two sided coin. If during the heat of an argument you react and tell your Ex what an idiot THEY are, and how everything is THEIR fault, then it has nothing to do with them. Your statements only reflect the kind of person you are, which is a person who likes to blame and judge. This has nothing to do with your Ex. Therefore, consciously make an effort to be the person you are, regardless of how your Ex is behaving. Make a list of all the qualities you admire in others, for example: kindness, confidence, compassion, and respect. Chances are you already possess the qualities within yourself. Be very careful not to make statements that don't reflect who you are, even when you may be tempted to give into the hurt and anger you feel.

Step 3

Release your judgments and opinions by becoming friends with Death. As morbid as this sounds, realize that in 100 years, you and your Ex will likely be dead, and nothing you ever fought about will be remembered. If your Ex has the obsessive need to be right and argue with you about everything, give in to their whim and say, "You are absolutely right." Not only will this reinforce your relationship with Death and save you a tremendous amount of personal power, your Ex will find it impossible to argue with you because you are giving the non-verbal message that it really doesn't matter. As one my favorite authors Wayne Dyer once said, "Have you ever noticed how hard it is to argue with someone who isn't obsessed with being right?"

Step 4:

If the hurt and anger is overwhelming, distance yourself from your Ex completely. And no matter what, get on your knees and pray for your Ex every morning. Pray that your Ex will be granted all of the health, wealth and happiness you wish for yourself. Even if you are not a religious person, or you don't believe in God, the act itself is liberating.

In twelve step programs, such as Alcoholics Anonymous, they are taught to pray for people they have a deep resentment towards. At first, you will not mean a word of the prayer. But if you say the prayer consistently for two weeks, you will come to genuinely mean it, and find that there is a part of you that realizes your Ex is just a human being, with their own imperfections, weaknesses and short comings. If you go deeper, you will realize your Ex may also be a very hurt and scared person - even if they outwardly seem very hostile, aggressive and manipulative. Of course, no matter what happened to your Ex in their childhood or even in their day to day life - it does not give them a reason to mistreat you. But by being aware of the fact that your Ex has a certain set of issues to deal with on their own time, it will help you replace the hurt and anger you feel with compassion and understanding.

Step 5:

Own your personal power. Because when you are who you are, regardless of the situation or circumstance that comes your way, then this transforms you into a very powerful person. This is the step that absolutely baffles your Ex, because by you being who you are, and not letting them get you down - it sends your Ex the non-verbal message that you are who you are and they are who they are. But most importantly, it tells your Ex that you are not going to take any of their crap! When you respond to your Ex's hostility with kindness, and your Ex's blame with compassion, it frustrates them to no end, because your Ex cannot get you to play their game.

Step 6:

Come to understand that you are doing all of this work for no other reason than to realize who you are, restore your sense of balance, and reclaim your personal power. If you do all of this work in order to manipulate your Ex, and make them want you back, your Ex will subconsciously sense your intentions, because at one point or another, you will slip and let your intentions be known without realizing it. When this happens, you will give all of your power back to your Ex, and will have to start all over again with Step 1.

Step 6 is often tricky, because if you master each step up to this point, your Ex may very well want to reconcile. At the very least, your Ex will begin responding to the kindness you send their way in a positive fashion. But regardless if you want to get back together with your Ex, just be friends, or just get over the obsessive thinking - remember your sole purpose is to realize who you are, restore your sense of balance, and reclaim your personal power. If you do all of this work just to manipulate your Ex into responding the way you want them to, it may work for a very short period of time. But I guarantee your Ex will pick up on the fact that your intentions are not genuine, and you will lose your personal power. Not only that, but when you genuinely become who you are, you attract the right kind of people to your life. And maybe your Ex is not the person you are meant to be with! And the only way you will know if you are meant to be with your Ex or anyone else is if you are genuinely who you are.

Step 7:

Forgive your Ex, no matter what they did or didn't do. Unfortunately, it may not be enough at this point to say, "I forgive my ex." And leave it at that. Forgiveness has little to do with words, and more to do with action. Before proceeding with this step, I recommend reading up on the topic of forgiveness, and reading heroic stories about the power of forgiveness. I once read a story about a woman whose daughter was brutally raped and murdered by a man that was eventually caught and sent to prison. As anyone can imagine, the woman spent years of her life in rage and obsession over what this man had done to her daughter. I am sure there are no words to express how much pain this woman was feeling. However, she somehow stumbled on a book entitled, The Course of Miracles and began reading about what the power of forgiveness could do for her. She started to pray for the man, and eventually sent him a letter, letting him know she had forgiven him for the actions he took against her daughter, even though she didn't condone his behavior. To make a long story short, the man wrote the woman back and apologized profusely. The woman felt compelled to see this young man in prison, and she held him as he cried during their first visit. To make a long story short, they became friends, and she became his number one advocate in attempts to release him from prison.

There are not a lot of people walking on the planet as courageous as this woman, but it is an extreme example of what is possible within each one of us. I thought about this woman before I reached out to my Ex with forgiveness in my heart. I sent a gift to my Ex and the woman my Ex left me for, which seemed to pale in comparison to this woman's story. Of course, it took me a little over a year to reach that point, and a lot of soul searching. To this day, I love my Ex with all of my heart on a platonic level. We live in two totally different cities, but still call and send each other emails on occasion as good friends.

I am also in a healthy relationship with someone I am deeply in love with. Next week will be our two year anniversary. I do not think I would be as happy and as deeply in love with this new person as I am now, had I not let go of the anger, bitterness, and resentment I once felt towards my Ex, which is another reason why forgiveness is so important.

A lot of people believe turning off your feelings for a person you once were in a romantic relationship with, or even hating them is a way to show that they are "over" the person. But I believe the exact opposite is true. When you are completely "over" a person, you really wish them nothing but the best - and you are totally detached emotionally from how they act or react. Another point to consider is the fact that love isn't real unless you loved your Ex for the person they are, not the person you wanted them to be. And just because the romantic relationship didn't work out, doesn't mean your Ex isn't a lovable person.

How can you tell if a guy likes you or is interested? You noticed him when you were standing and talking with a friend. 1. He tells someone

Is he interested? He likes you if he tells a mutual friend that he wants to know more about you, or he asks other people who you are and where you're from. He is trying to act like he's "just asking" but his questions indicate more than a casual interest. And when he tells someone that he finds you attractive, he probably knows that it will get back to you. He's hoping it does.

2. The look

He gives you a look that betrays his calm exterior. Even though he is across the room, "that look" he has says it all. It is sweeping, from your head to your toes, and then his eyes linger on yours. You think you notice the beginning of a tentative smile.

3. The conversation

Does he like you? When he manages to get close enough to you, to ask you questions, he is interested. He appears to be listening and responds to what you say. He's moving in to the ultimate question, which is: "Are you seeing anyone." He would only ask this question if he wanted to date you, and he hopes the answer is "No." Never ever wear a ring in public. When a guy is across the room, he cannot tell which finger it is on and he may assume incorrectly that you are taken. If he doesn't ask you the question of whether or not you are attached, he may ask someone whom you both know.

4. He appears unexpectedly

He likes you a lot if he shows up out of nowhere. He can only do that if he has been asking people about your schedule, or he has been paying attention to where you are going and at what time. His face may turn red when he sees you. A sudden, "Oh, hi," is his way of saying, "I don't want to seem obvious, but I am interested in you." If you feel the same way, do not act shy. Stop and talk to him.

5. EVERYONE likes you

Is he interested? When you are well liked and a happy person, why wouldn't he like you? Of course he does. If you don't have a great life, however, now is your time to start working on one. Take a look at your career possibilities, body image, future, plans, and resources. You may be naturally talented at something, but it won't matter unless you work on your strengths. Misused or unused talents fade away. School and training do not.

These are the five signs that he is interested and he is on the verge of asking you out. Make it easy for him and be friendly. This is where relationships begin.

YOU ARE THE ONE BEGGING TO COSY UP ALL THE TIME

Once again, let's get back to traditions and norms. Men have testosterone, something that makes them yearn for sex more than women. If you're the one who's begging for sex, he's either having an affair with another woman, or he's having an affair with another man. Or he's just not into women, and he's married you.

HE WANTS TO DO A THREESOME... BUT WITH ANOTHER GUY...

Men like porn flicks with lesbians in them. But they wouldn't trade this fetish for sex with another man. Unless, he's bisexual of course. Protect Your Family With 5 Grilling Safety Tips

Whether you are grilling for a group, or just grilling a quick family meal, it's important to follow a few basic safety tips for outdoor grilling and dining.

1. Make sure to clean the grill thoroughly before and after each use. The best way to do this is with a wire brush made specifically for grills. Not only will your food taste better if it isn't exposed to last week's burned on marinade, but you will be reducing the amount of germs and bacteria that can colonize on the remains of old food.

Each time you finish cooking, turn the grill down to a low temperature and leave it on for about ten minutes to burn off as much residue as possible. This will give you a head start on the next cleaning.

2. Never allow cooked food to come into contact with raw food. The raw meat undoubtedly contains bacteria, which will transfer to your cooked food upon contact. The bacteria can grow quickly and cause food poisoning, even though the food itself was already cooked. Any dishes or cooking utensils that have handled raw food must never be used to handle cooked food, until they have been washed with hot water and dish soap.

3. Practice patience while cooking. It is a common grilling mistake to set the heat too high and cook food too fast. The outside of the meat appears to be well-cooked, but the temperature inside the meat has not yet risen high enough to kill off the bacteria present in the meat. The result is potential food poisoning and can be particularly dangerous when cooking poultry.

I counted myself in that group too. While waiting for a cup of Latte at my local Starbucks, I saw a regular come into the shop. I probably see this lady at least 3 times a week. Who's one-sandwich Sally? I'll tell you. While in primary school many years ago, my favorite part of the day was lunch time. Sometimes all that education stuff made my head hurt, so it was nice to relax with my friends during lunch time. The members of my gang were Jeremy, Lisa, Karen, Wayne, myself and one-sandwich Sally.

Why did we call her one-sandwich Sally?
Because she always came to school with the same Mayonnaised Hovis sandwich filled with cucumber and Tuna. Every single day! In the summer months...Cucumber and Tuna sandwich. In the winter months...Cucumber and Tuna sandwich. You could never really exchange anything of value with Sally because she always had Cucumber and Tuna in her lunch box. So what does one-sandwich Sally have to do with our Starbucks lady? Well, every time she came into the store and I saw her around town, she always carried the same red Fendi Hobo bag. Don't get me wrong, the Fendi Hobo bag is a great bag. One of my favorites but Starbucks lady had this bag when she came into the store in a pair of jeans and t-shirt. The same red Fendi handbag when she came in wearing a horse rider gear. I even saw her at a dinner event wearing a green evening dress with this red Fendi hobo handbag. A clutch purse would have been more appropriate.

How to Flat Iron Your Hair

The day I was to meet my former boyfriend's mother, I had the worst flat iron fiasco ever. Meeting his mother was a giant step in our relationship. By our conversations, "Ma Dear " was a hard nut to crack. As a former beauty queen, she was all about appearances. In fact, Brian once told me his mother completely brought his former girlfriend to tears after demanding he not get her pregnant fearing she would be stuck with ugly grandchildren. How horrifying. Let just say I was a little nervous about meeting "Ma Dear."

Low on funds, I believed myself capable of straightening my hair well if not better than my stylist Deona straightens. Pressed for time, I decided not to fully wash my hair (Mistake: Always start with clean hair. Grease, dirt left on hair will cook under the straightening iron). Instead, I damped my mane with a pump spray and blow-dried it. To get it bone straight I use the hottest setting on the dryer (Bad Move: Try not to overexpose your hair with too much heat. Instead, use the cold setting to get a smooth shine). It was already 5 o'clock and I had 45 minutes to get dress before Brian with his mother for dinner. I began flat ironing my hair, placing bits of styling gel on each section before placing it between the iron plates. (No!This was the colossal mistake of the evening. Never use styling gel in hair before straightening. It cakes and hardened the hair). Rushing, I did not pay attention to the smell or the texture my hair. Therefore, I proceeded to get dress.

5: 37 pm: The Introduction
The doorbell rang. My heart was racing. To avoid losing my curl, I decided to do my hair last. I step into the mirror and noticed how hard and stiff my hair was. The doorbell rang for the second time. I picked up the brush and attempted to get it through my hair with no luck. Then I got a whiff of my hair. It smelled like old burned tire. Brian yelled out my name. I panicked; I started spraying midst of water on the hair in the hopes it would loosen up. A hard knock. Defeated, I wrapped a towel around my head and answered the door. I looked like Auntie Mama. With tears in my eyes, I told Brian and his mother of my straightening iron fiasco. You should have seen and heard the gasps from Brian's mother when I took off my towel. Let just say, we broke up three weeks later.

Tips to Remember

1. Wash, condition hair. Blow-dry your hair until semi-damp and continue drying during the straightening process. Do not overexpose your hair with heat. Instead, try the cold setting to get more sheen. I recommend blow-drying you hair at night take to flat ironing it in the morning. Use a light styling midst on hair. Do not saturate. Styling gels and sprays stick to the iron, increasing the chances of you permanently damaging or burning the hair

2. Section your hair in the middle. With a rack tail comb, section small pieces to iron. Place hair section in between the flat iron plates, starting at the roots. Then slowly slide the clamps down the hair shaft to its ends. Repeat steps 1 thru 5 until entire head is complete.

3. Style and finish with holding spray.

Bio Engineered Flowers: Commentary

When I read a press release on the emergence of bio engineered flowers, I became furious. I heard about the food, but now flowers. Enough is enough. We are stepping into very dangerous territory. Shouldn't be be protecting species that are endangered? I know people ( exempt are those people working for florist shops, like Thousand Oaks Florists) believe that flowers serve little purpose. But engineering flowers. Where are we in Mars.... in a futuristic film starring Laurence Fishburne. Is it just me or does anyone else finds this a tad bit scary? When I look at a magnolia bloom it warms my heart. I'm sure I'm not the only one who actually gets happy when they receive a bouquet of birthday flowers. I like walking into a florist shop and appreciating the talent it requires to grow that flower. I am particularly fond of tulips and roses, and often use to order arrangements for my boss through Thousand Oaks Flower Delivery. I'm not sure whether I will feel the same if I'm found out it was bio engineered. I believe there is something in our constitution that forbids such a thing. However, during the Bush Administration, this law was bypassed somehow. What else are they doing this with...food, water? In the future, we won't be able to grow flowers from seeds in our own garden. It would be a copyright infringement. Are you serious?

I watched a documentary film called the Future of Food. It addressed some serious issues; ones I can see apply to this scenario. I truly wonder what agricultural purists thinks of bio-engineered flowers and food? In short, pharmaceutical companies genetically alter the seed. Then implant a fail safe to prevent farmers from using the seeds of the blossom product (vegetable, plant..whatever) and patented that genetic cell. Anything with that molecule is considered property of that said company. In the future, will that mean humans too?

Holocaust Museum Killing Leaves Visitor Wondering: Why?

The shooting at the Holocaust Museum moved me to recall the first and only time I visited there. I had been living in DC for a year and often took advantage of having varies museums available to me free-of-charge. I went as much as three times a week.

It was a cold day in October of 2003. The air was crisp and fresh, hitting my lungs like peppermint candy. Fall mornings in DC are especially beautiful and mystical. The dampness of the night rain coats the monotone city streets, buildings, and people. The sun would sometimes peak through the heavy morning clouds reflecting light on unsettled dewdrops, causing them to sparkle like diamonds. This was a good enough day to journey to the Holocausts Museum.

Three days prior, I watched the epic film Schindler's List . This film moved me largely because of the similar pain and cultural displacement shared by both the Jewish and African-American communities. The Holocaust oppressed European Jews and the Middle Passage's cultural destruction of African slaves and their descendants for generations.
As a constant student of life, I wanted to understand more of the Jews' suffering and the lost souls who committed such ghastly acts of evil. The traffic is always an annoyance in DC, but this day I was particularity agitated. In hindsight, the anxiety, I felt was misdirected at the traffic. In actuality, I feared what ugly truth about the state of humanity awaited me there. The Holocaust is a clear, most recent example of what can happen if we don't periodically measure our society's morality. The lines of good and evil often blurs in the complexities of the group dynamic.

What is the summer season without a sexually charged, coming-of-age flick in the mix? The small independently produced Art of Being Straight is another filmmaker’s social commentary against homosexual intolerance. Writer-producer, Josen Rosen plays the lead role (surprised…most likely not) Jon whose visit with schoolmate forces him to address his duplicitous sexual identity. The Taking of Pelham 1-2-3 is a typical testosterone driven Hollywood action remake starring Denzel Washington and John Travolta. Although the plot is formula, there’s nothing mundane about the performances. Good guy New York City subway dispatcher (Washington) gets thrown into a web of chaos created by a psychopathic criminal named Ryder; played by John Travolta. Once again, producer Nia Vadarlos (Big Fat Greek Wedding), brings to the screen her annoyingly over-the-top depictions of Greek people and culture in the film, My Life in Ruins. Billed as the Greek How Stella Got Her Groove Back meets Under the Tuscan Sky, Vadarlos (can you guessed it..) plays the lead character, Georgia. Gerogia travels to the Mediterranean for some R & R. The long expected Land of the Lost starring Will Ferrell is a remake of the classic 1970’s Saturday morning television series originally created by Sid & Marty Kroft. In this silver screen version, the nutty scientist Dr. Rick Marshall’s (Ferrell) invention warps him and his colleagues through a space-time vortex, where they must discover ways to survive in an odd and primitive environment. Outside the basic concept of space travel and the scenes of the characters sprinting from huge prehistoric dinosaurs, the two versions differ in tone and characterization. The Porter Tree House was scrapped for a cave. Timmy and Annie are replaced with a sexy, nerdy aide (Anna Friel) and survivalist guide, Wil played by Danny McBride. Stink a.k.a. Chaka, the monkey man remains in the tale for comedic relief. The Land of the Lost is projected to have a celebrated premiere weekend and is slated for a nationwide release. This film is rated PG-13. The Proposal is the long-awaited return of Hollywood darling, Sandra bullock who plays Margret Tate, a hard-nose executive who revels in humiliating her assistant, Andrew (Ryan Reynolds). But when she is told of her possible deportation back to Canada, she forces Ryan to marry her. Directed by Anne Fletcher, the Proposal brings nothing that hasn’t been seen on the silver screen before, but for those who enjoy mindless slapstick comedy this is the film for you. It also stars Mary Steenburgen, and Craig T. Nelson and is rated PG-13.

Directly from the workshop of Oscar–Award winning director Sam Mendes, comes Away We Go. The charming comedy stars the witty John Krasinski of The Office and Maya Rudolph (Saturday Night Live), the daughter of the late songstress, Minnie Riperton. This Focus Feature film tells of a grundge couple who’s expecting in a few months. They decide to take a road trip in the hopes of discovering a place to settle down permenantly. It also stars Jeff Daniels, Carmen Ejogo, Jim Gaffigan, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Josh Hamilton, Allison Janney, Melanie Lynskey, Chris Messina, Catherine O’Hara, and Paul Schneider. Pop star, Mariah Carey teamed up with indie filmmaker Aaron Woodley for his fourth directorial attempt, Tennessee. The small film with its large drama also stars newcomers, Adam Rothenberg and Ethan Peck who play brother in search of their estranged father. Vivendi Entertainment is the film’s distributors and is rated R.

The Transformer 2: Revenge of the Fallen hits both traditional and IMAX theaters this month with great anticipation. Hollywood heartthrob, Shia LaBouef reprises the role of Sam Witwicky who is once again caught in the middle of the war between the Autobots and Decepticons. Call of the wild 3D is a modern take on the Jack London’s classic short Novel. Eddie Murphy performs his slapstick niche once again in the family comedy Imagine That. This time Murphy is an overworked financial executive who has a string of great luck when he discovers his talents of his indigo-child daughter played by Bobb'e J. Thompson. This film was directed by Karey Kirkpatrick and is rated PG.

In the Last International Playboy, urbanite womanizer Jack Frost, played by Jason Behr (Roswell), has a moment of reflection, after hearing of the upcoming nuptials of his childhood love. The news culminated by the recent mother's suicide pushed him into a downward spell of drugs, booze, and women. Creator, Duncan Jones, brings us an intriguingly odd tale in the shadows of 2001 Space Odyssey. In the film Moon, astronaut, Sam Bell is at the end of his tour on the Moon, when he soon begins to question the validity of the assignment, and disturbingly enough his own existence. David plays an eccentric New Yorker who chucks-up urban life to live as a bohemian with a southern darling played by Patricia Clarkson. Civil Union.... A Corrective Solution

I believe some gay activists do the cause a disservice. I am not homophobic by any means, but hear me out. Marriage is a term describing a religious rite (ritual), symbolizing the covenant made with Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. When the church was the sole authority in governing, there was no need for a marriage license and like records. Certain paperwork, like baptismal was and in some cases still is looked at as official documentation. Our founding father set precedence by separating church and state. Doing so, a binding contract presided by the clergy solely was no longer sufficient. It must be also bound and certified in accordance to the laws of the land. This is the church; specifically, the Catholic Church will not honor a divorce but the courts can legally break that contract. Now in the case of gay marriage, I believe that gay advocate is looking at this wrong. They are getting caught up in the linguistics. Verbiage. Law is primarily the use words and how words can be manipulated to fit the outline of the constitution. The word marriage is a religious rite. Religion defines that word as the covenant (contract) between Adam, Eve and God. The law is not in place to contradict, but the lawfully protect the right of religious freedom and its claim on the institution (covenant/contract) of marriage as a religious rite. Now, the constitution also protects the right of every American citizen. In this case of the civil rights of gays, the courts have fairly presented a comprised that would protect both sides. A civil union can be honored by the court, despite not being honored by the church. Gay advocates are beating their heads against the wall by attempting to force the verbiage marriage, which was originally a religious rite. By accepting the term civil union, our society would have no choice but to accept and honor that contract through the laws of the land. Balance. If I was gay, I would not care if some facet of this society agreed with my choices and refuse to allow me the same set words to reference what I know to be true. Commitment, Love, Respect. As long as my rights are protected by the laws, I would care less what they called it. Get the protective rights first then worry about changing society's perception of the community. Look how long it took for us as a nation to get to the point where an African-American could be President. LB Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act in 1968. There were and still are people who believe we are no more than animals. Who cares? The law protects the rights of all minorities as human being, as a citizen, with an inherited stake in the country. Get the rights then worry about what they will call it. Just my thoughts.

Could Your Man Be at Risk For Prostate Cancer?

If you love your man then you should educate yourself on risk factors of prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in American men. According to the American Cancer Society, an estimated 30,000 men will die of prostate cancer in 2009. An astounding number, 200,000 to be exact, of
new cases will be diagnosed this year alone. African-American men between the ages of 35-66 are most at risk. Researchers have yet to pen-point a direct cause to the disease, but they have identified a list of general common factors, which may increase one's chances of developing prostate cancer.

Common Risks and Factors

It appears, demographically, men between the ages of 40-67 are most at risk. Some believe this is due to prostate gland growth, which commonly occurs in aging mid-lifers. It is rare that a patient is diagnosed before 40, but cases are increasing each year. When diagnosed in African-American men the cancer is usually at an advanced stage. One primary reason could be socio-economical. African-American men make up a large percentage of the uninsured in the United States.

Steven Spielberg Set to Helm MLK Biopic

Legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg is set to produce the forthcoming biopic on the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This is not the first attempt at a cinematic portrayal of the civil rights leader. The 1978 version was a three-part Showtime mini-series starring Ossie Davis, Dick Anthony, Cicely Tyson, Dolph Sweet and Paul Winfield as Dr.King. Spielberg's DreamWorks SKG has been granted full rights to all intellectual properties, including; speeches, books, and unpublished materials by the King Estate, after a long stint at the negotiating table.

Dr. King actions in the mid-sixties ignited the budding civil rights movement and changed the landscape of American culture; ultimately winning him a Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. He was gunned downed four years later in Memphis questionably by the lone assailant, James Earl Ray. After King's assassination, laws were put into place granting more protective rights to American citizens, in particular minorities.

In a statement made by the press, Spielberg humbly expressed his excitement for what will be a remarkable film. ""It is our hope that the creative power of film and the impact of Dr. King's life can combine to present a story of undeniable power that we can all be proud of." Veteran producer, Suzanne de Passé of Lonesome Dove and Madison Jones (Humpty Dumpty) is set to co-produce alongside Spielberg. To date, there isn't a writer, director or lead actor attached to the project.

What You Don't Know Will Kill You.
We have all been taught about the importance of healthy eating and exercise. Remember in grade school, the teacher would spend the afternoon going over the colored food pyramid chart. If you were anything like me at that age, you tuned the instructor out and spent the entire lesson
passing notes. I eventually picked up on a few healthy habits from home, but mostly I stumbled upon the information via outside sources, such as, commercials and poster advertisements plastered on public buses from the local health department. Today, text messaging has replaced the paper notes, and the posters, well; technology has given us the Internet. The message hasn't changed much, except the recent finding contributing certain foods with cancer prevention. Nonetheless, the story is the same for many of us who were raised in a low-income household. Food is something hard to come by and whatever is cheap will do. When a single mother of three, struggles with two jobs to put food on the table, you had better not to make any requests or refusals. There's a great chance you would go to bed hungry or worse, spanked and then sent to bed hungry.....
